AIR QUALITY
The same way that better highways reduce congestion and auto emissions, better airfields can help decrease the amount of fuel burned by aircraft. Our efforts to build one of the most efficient airfields have helped reduce aircraft emissions — saving time and money for passengers and the airlines in the process.
Another challenge facing the airport is the number of shuttles that circle the terminals to pick up passengers. Dozens of buses circle continuously, burning fuel and releasing hydrocarbons into the air. Plans for a new transportation center will ease these issues when it opens next year.
The center will create dedicated space on the east side of Terminal 3 for rental car buses to park and wait for passengers. In doing so, it will improve traffic flow, reduce air pollution and eliminate excess fuel burn.
Alternative Fuels
The airport is committed to lowering emissions. We have begun adding hybrid vehicles to our maintenance fleet. We have also replaced older boilers with high efficiency units that use less energy.
Our firemen have switched to cleaner burning propane and Tek Flame at their training facility.
By using bio-diesel fuel, we have cut greenhouse gas emissions from large mowers — no small matter, given the thousands of acres of grass our crews maintain.

Running tractors on bio-diesel involves recycling. Our 40 restaurants send their grease to be converted to bio-diesel fuel.
