POLICE DEPT

The airport police maintain one of the most versatile and highly-trained departments in the Tri-State. They serve a population of more than 10,000 employees and more than 10 million passengers annually. As a result, the dispatch center logs more than 15,000 calls for service per year, including thousands of traffic incidents in and around the airport.

Because they are based at an international gateway, the airport police are trained and equipped to deal with nearly any type of emergency.  In addition to its explosives and narcotics units, the department has its own SWAT team and two full-time investigators.

A focus on community-oriented policing may seem surprising. Then again, the majority of traffic at the airport is foot traffic, so the atmosphere lends itself to one-on-one interaction between the police and the people they serve.
